  • Appius. Creation of an icon.
  • Since 1977 Hans Terzer has borne responsibility for wine production at St. Michael-Eppan Winery, bringing it to the top of the Italian and international wine world in just a few years. “I’ve had the idea of APPIUS in my head for a long time; I just had to wait for the right moment.” During his regular inspections of the vineyards, he found many years ago that individual vines had the potential to produce absolute top wines, due to a very low yield. “I wanted to harvest and develop these grapes separately, creating a completely new and sensational wine – a wine that we at St. Michael-Eppan had not created up until now.” Sourced from various historical vineyards within the municipality of Eppan, the majority is Chardonnay; Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon comprise the remainder. “APPIUS is basically fermented and aged in small oak barrels. After twelve months of aging in wood, it then matures on the lees for nearly three more years, inside steel tanks. Agency: Lifecircus.it

  • For see and appreciate the design of label, we need to interact directly with the bottle, we need to see through reflections of the ambience, through the deep dark of the glass bottle, therefore the label design is an eternal play of light versus dark. The dark glass bottle makes it clear that the essence is always invisible to the eye and that we should allow the senses to lead us. In this first vintage, the concept is a symbol that evokes a strand of grapevine, which grows in a regular way and is always extraordinarily unique, like a DNA filament, like a unique nature creation.   • Perfection in nature is pure mathematics, visible to us through the extraordinary and sublime creations that every day we see around us, a simple and colorful sunflower, a humble green broccoli, a magnificent oak tree, extraordinary and wonderful creations where a crescendo of infinite numbers, beauty is expressed and capture the attention of our eyes and our heart. In fact, many plants and fruits prefer matrices related to the numerical Fibonacci sequence and the relative golden section.   • In this particular vintage, the challenge was to create a label that reflects and give at the first sight an idea of the sophisticated and elegant bouquet of this Appius 2014. Experience in tasting Appius become visually tangible, becomes music and sound harmonics, giving shape, dimensions and colour. These elements have become the driving forces for creating the Appius 2014 best visual expression and also the new label design. From the extraordinary phenomenon called synaesthesia, I tried to represent the sensation of what we perceive during the tasting, of how the bouquet evolves and how its taking structure, not only through the taste and olfaction senses but also through sight.   • Designing and innovating at each vintage for ten years was really a great challenge, and for this special occasion, for this milestone in the Appius collection, I wanted to create a break with the works created in the past, something that could communicate this tenth anniversary differently. Platinum and gold, a combination of elegance and preciousness, a contrast between linearity and roundness, two archetypal shapes that play with each other, a perfect dualism that vibrates within a code that is lost in time.
